Very Very British

The Arden British Day is by now an established institution among lovers of British automobiles. Every year, at the end of September, numerous owners of vintage cars go on a pilgrimage to Castle Zelem to spend an autumn day on the meadows around the castle together with their host Jochen Arden.

On Sunday, September 23, 2018, the vintage car event got a special, British touch: thick rain clouds turned the Lower Rhine into a typical English autumn landscape. Despite the pouring rain, more than 200 vehicles from all over Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium came to Kranenburg-Mehr. Equipped with umbrellas and rubber boots, the automobile enthusiasts admired the cult objects in front of the grey-cloaked backdrop of Burg Zelem. “My car was built in England, a country known for rain, so I’m not going to be put off by a little change of weather,” says the owner of a Jaguar. It might rain cats and dogs, but the British car enthusiast will still enjoy a perfect day out.

The picnic basket stayed at home, but instead the visitors warmed themselves up in one of the tents with hot tea or coffee and enjoyed a tasty grilled Bratwurst. A Scottish bagpiper, who already played at the Edinburgh Castle in honour of the Queen, provided the atmosphere. The numerous visitors exchanged views about their classic cars until the late afternoon and in the end they said goodbye to their host with the words “We’ll be back next year!” The fourth Arden British Day will take place on Sunday, September 15th, 2019.
